Kenleigh had been asking for a playhouse for quite some time. We stumbled upon this perfect canvas during a recent trip to Sam’s. I knew immediately that this would be the perfect one to enhance, and give it some updated, personal touches. Kenleigh said she wanted it to look like a “real house” with plants that looked like mine. She loves watching HGTV and Fixer Upper with me. I wanted to give her a playhouse that Chip and Jo would be proud of. Enjoy the tour of “Kenleigh’s Crib!”:)
SEE HOW WE TURNED THIS…..

INTO THIS!

To set the stage for the space, we had Lowe’s cut us a piece of artificial grass to cover a large area for the kids to play. This way, we don’t have to worry about mowing in or around the playhouse. The second step, is finding a playhouse that is made out of the correct material that you can easily paint and drill holes. A traditional plastic playhouse does not work because the paint is not able to adhere like it does with wood. The one we chose was perfect because I knew I wanted to keep the color of the wood the same. By keeping the wood the same color, the painting was minimal. Basically everything that was painted red, I painted black.

I wanted to add more interest to the front, so I found these black plant hangers and drilled them into the wood. These small lanterns were the perfect small touch to give it a more “homey” and realistic feel. Simply put a battery operated or light a small candle for a glow. We are so ready for Springtime weather, so this cute chalkboard sign was appropriate! It wouldn’t be complete without a welcome mat, so this Target find was the perfect touch.
The playhouse came with these plastic planter boxes that screw into the front. They are perfect for adding real or faux floral. I purchased the ivy, succulents, and roses at Hobby Lobby. I used small pieces of floral foam to hold the flowers in place. I then covered the exposed floral foam with soil.
I LOVE that the playhouse has this cute bench. The back is reversible, so it turns to the inside. It is a perfect spot for little brother. It was red, so I simply painted it black. Living in West Texas, we have cactus everywhere, so it was fitting to add these faux cactus from Target. The small potted succulents were from the dollar section at Target.

Spray paint is my BFF, so anytime I can spray paint something, I do. It saves SO much time. I used this gold spray paint from Target to paint the handle on the front door, the faucet, and stove accents. This is the perfect gold color to give you a brass look without being yellow. The door, bench, and herb planters were painted with this Rust-oleum paint. It is a great outdoor option because it adheres to wood and plastic.

I knew I wanted to add some personal touches, so adding the monogram to the tea towel was small and inexpensive. There was no place to hang the towels, so I added a tension rod underneath the sink, and luckily the support beams underneath were the perfect distance apart to hold the rod. I also added another tension rod above the sink to add a small valance. Having the valance adds more interest and comfort to the space. The cactus rug is from At Home. I loved these encouraging signs from Hobby Lobby. The floral pastel theme adds an extra hint of girly.

This wire shelf is from Hobby Lobby. It was a brushed bronze color, so I spray painted it black. These little pencil holders were spray painted gold. They are the perfect size for holding markers, crayons, etc. Adding this shelf adds exposed storage to help keep things organized. I wanted to keep the inside very simple and open, so she would have more room to bring toys in to play.

Underneath the clocks are grey chalkboards. I used my vinyl cutter to cut stickers with cute and motivating words. She also wanted real plants that she could water, so I added inexpensive plastic planters from Dollar Tree and planted herbs. The plant markers were also from Dollar Tree, and I used my vinyl cutter to cut the words to mark the plants.

This was such a fun project to do with my daughter. She helped me pick out the plants and small details. Projects such as this don’t have to be expensive. Remember to check stores such as Dollar Tree, Target, Wal Mart, and Amazon for inexpensive accessories. Since Michaels and Hobby Lobby have their seasonal items on sale most of the time, I love finding my decor there.
I hope you enjoyed the tour! If this inspires you to start a project, please send or tag me in photos! I’d love to see what you create!
