Y’all know I love a good dip to serve to my guests. This layer dip is a traditional recipe with a couple updates. Layer dip is a hearty and filling appetizer, making it perfect for the upcoming Super Bowl.
Ingredients:
- Package of ground turkey
- 1 block of cream cheese (or sub sour cream)
- 1 can of refried beans
- 1 carton of cherry tomatoes or 3 regular vine tomatoes
- 1 white onion
- 4-5 avocados
- Shredded Mexican Cheese blend
- 2 packages of taco seasoning
- Tortilla chips
- Garlic salt and crushed red pepper-optional
Make sure you have a large enough dish to layer each ingredient. I prefer using a plastic dish that can be thrown away, because when hosting a party, the less clean up the better.
In a separate, microwaveable bowl, combine cream cheese and refried beans. Microwave them until soft. It is much easier to spread when softened. Remove from microwave and add 1 packet of taco seasoning. Stir until all 3 ingredients are mixed together.
In a skillet, cook the ground turkey until cooked all the way through. Add 1 packet of taco seasoning and follow directions on packet. Ground turkey is a great alternative to ground beef, it cuts down on your fat intake.
In a separate bowl, peel and mash the avocados. I like to add a bit of garlic salt and crushed red pepper flake to mixture, but this is optional!
Finally, dice white onion and tomatoes. This can be used only on top as a garnish, or you can make this one of your layers.
Now you are ready to layer! There is no perfect way to do this. Simply, spread the cream cheese and bean mixture on the bottom. Top that with avocado mixture. Put ground turkey on top of that. Sprinkle the turkey with shredded cheese, onion and tomato. Repeat the layers until you have used all of the ingredients. Top the final layer with the onion and tomato. That’s it! Serve with tortilla chips or Fritos.
Having a Super Bowl party? My favorite decor trick is using artificial grass to set the scene for the tablescape. Home Depot or Lowe’s will custom cut you a piece to fit your needs. I measured my kitchen island and had a piece cut that size. It was only $11 for the whole piece!
For the party I will lay it down and set the food on top. Not only is it a cute way to incorporate the football theme, it also makes cleaning up a breeze. Parties are messy, I literally use all dishes that are disposable, and roll up the artificial grass and throw it away. Since it is so inexpensive, I don’t feel bad throwing it away. My kitchen island is now food and mess free!
My favorite place to get festive throw away dishes and napkins is Party City. They always have great options for whatever theme you need! These cute football cartons are great for displaying the chips. I also love them for serving individual servings of popcorn.
Hope this gave you some inspiration to make your party a little less messy!
XOXO,
Lyndsey
